Water Fire Extinguishing System (Sprinkler System)

Fire Systems

Water Fire Extinguishing System (Sprinkler System)

Water-based fire suppression systems are designed to control or extinguish fires by distributing water through a fixed network of sprinklers, nozzles, or hose reels.
Depending on the application, the system can be configured as wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, or deluge type.

System design follows European (EN 12845, EN 671) or American NFPA (13, 14, 15) standards.
Therefore, all design, installation, testing, and maintenance must be carried out by qualified fire protection professionals.

Scope of Use

These systems are not suitable for areas where water exposure may cause damage, such as server rooms or archives.
However, in environments where rapid suppression and high water flow are required, they provide an extremely effective fire control method when properly designed and installed.

Regulatory Requirements (Turkey)

According to the Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings, sprinkler systems are mandatory in:

  • Non-residential buildings over 30.5 m in height

  • Residential buildings over 51.5 m in height

  • Covered car parks exceeding 600 m² or 10 vehicles

  • Hotels, dormitories, guesthouses with over 100 rooms or 200 beds

  • Shopping and entertainment centers over 2000 m²

  • Facilities containing flammable materials over 1000 m²

Sprinkler System Types

Wet Pipe System

The most common type — pipes are constantly filled with water and directly connected to the main supply.
When heat activates the sprinkler head, water is discharged immediately.
Not suitable for freezing environments.

Dry Pipe System

Pipes are filled with pressurized air or nitrogen instead of water.
When a sprinkler activates, air pressure drops and water flows into the pipes.
Ideal for cold storage and unheated spaces.

Pre-Action System

Pipes contain pressurized air and are controlled by a fire detection system.
Available in single-, non-, or double-interlock configurations.
Provides water flow within 60 seconds after activation.

Deluge System

Uses open sprinklers or nozzles that discharge water simultaneously when the detection system triggers.
Preferred in high-hazard industrial areas requiring fast suppression.

Piping Configurations

  • Tree System

  • Loop System

  • Grid System

  • Multi-Loop Network

The piping layout is selected based on building design, risk category, and hydraulic performance requirements.

System Design Principles

Design begins with determining the fire hazard classification of the area.
The sprinkler type, density, flow rate, and water supply duration are then calculated accordingly.

In high-risk facilities such as warehouses, proper sprinkler selection and hydraulic balance are essential for effective fire control.
The total water supply must cover sprinklers, hose reels, and hydrants for the entire protection period.

Engineered by MYMEC GROUP

At MYMEC GROUP, we design and install EN 12845 / NFPA 13-compliant water-based fire suppression systems.
Each system is verified through hydraulic modeling, pressure testing, and performance analysis to ensure full reliability.

Our goal is to provide safe, sustainable, and long-lasting fire protection systems tailored to every project’s needs.
