Novec 1230 Gas Fire Suppression System

Fire Systems

Novec 1230 Gas Fire Suppression System

The Novec 1230 Gas Fire Suppression System is an environmentally friendly alternative to FM200, offering efficient and safe fire protection for sensitive environments.
Gas distribution is performed through fixed nozzles, and the system must be designed in accordance with EN 15004-2.
Therefore, all stages — design, installation, testing, maintenance, and modification — should be carried out by qualified fire protection professionals.

Novec 1230 (chemical name: Dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one, FK-5-1-12) is a clean, non-conductive, and low-toxicity agent that provides effective suppression across all major fire classes (A, B, C).

Environmental Benefits

One of the key advantages of Novec 1230 is its minimal environmental impact.
It has an atmospheric lifetime of only 5 days, compared to FM200’s 33 years, making it a far more sustainable choice.
Novec 1230 has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0) and an extremely low global warming potential (GWP < 1), fully compliant with the Kyoto Protocol and EU F-Gas Regulations.

Applications

Novec 1230 systems are ideal for environments where water-based suppression could damage sensitive assets:

  • Bank vaults

  • Libraries and manuscript collections

  • Archives and record rooms

  • Data centers and IT facilities

  • Communication centers

  • Transformer and switch rooms

  • Control and test laboratories

  • Electrical cabinets and breaker panels

  • Flammable liquid storage areas

System Design

Design begins with identifying the fire hazard classification.
According to EN 15004-2, there are three main categories:

  • Class B: Flammable liquids

  • Surface Class A: Solid surface fires

  • High-Hazard Class A: Rapidly spreading solid fires

The required gas quantity is determined based on minimum design concentrations (typically 5.3–5.9%), calculated using hydraulic modeling software.

Toxicity and Safety

When properly designed, Novec 1230 systems are non-toxic and safe for occupied spaces.

  • NOAEL: Concentration at which no adverse effects are observed.

  • LOAEL: Lowest concentration at which adverse effects may occur.

These safety margins ensure the system’s reliability in occupied environments.

Installation and Operation Guidelines

  • Gas volume must be calculated per EN 15004-2 standards.

  • Piping must be verified via hydraulic calculation tools.

  • Use high-pressure seamless steel pipes and certified fittings.

  • Installation must be handled by trained technicians.

  • Piping must undergo nitrogen pressure leak tests.

  • The protected room must be airtight, with sealed penetrations and automatic dampers.

  • After discharge, gas must remain in the enclosure for at least 10 minutes; this is verified using a Door Fan Integrity Test.

Engineered by MYMEC GROUP

At MYMEC GROUP, we design and install Novec 1230 systems that meet international safety and environmental standards.
Every project includes hazard analysis, gas distribution modeling, and integrity testing, ensuring sustainable and reliable performance.
Our mission is to provide safe, environmentally responsible, and high-efficiency fire protection solutions.
