FM200 Gas Fire Suppression System

Fire Systems

FM200 Gas Fire Suppression System

The FM200 Gas Fire Suppression System distributes Heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea) through fixed nozzles to extinguish fires efficiently and safely.
All phases — design, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance — must be performed in accordance with EN 15004-5 standards by certified professionals.

FM200 is a clean, non-conductive, and fast-acting agent that suppresses fire by absorbing heat and interrupting the chemical chain reaction.
With a boiling point of -15.6 °C, it is ideal for total flooding protection in enclosed environments.

Fire Suppression Mechanism

Contrary to common belief, FM200 does not extinguish fire solely by reducing oxygen levels.
It acts through both physical and chemical suppression, absorbing heat and breaking the combustion chain.
FM200 is effective against Class A (solid), Class B (liquid), and Class C (gas) fires and, when used according to standards, poses no toxicity risks to humans and causes no damage to sensitive electronics.

Application Areas

FM200 systems are commonly used in environments where water-based suppression is unsuitable, including:

  • Bank vaults

  • Libraries and archives

  • Data processing and server rooms

  • Communication centers

  • Transformer and switch rooms

  • Control rooms and laboratories

  • Flammable liquid storage areas

  • Electrical panels and breaker rooms

Each system is engineered based on room volume, risk classification, and equipment sensitivity.

Design Principles

The design process begins by identifying the fire hazard classification as per EN 15004-5, which defines:

  • Class B: Flammable liquids

  • Class A (Surface): Combustible solids

  • High-Hazard Class A: Deep-seated solid fires

Minimum design concentrations for these classes are used to calculate the required gas quantity for the protected volume.
Hydraulic flow calculations ensure uniform discharge and proper nozzle coverage.

Installation and Key Considerations

  • Gas quantity must comply with EN 15004-5 concentration limits.

  • Seamless steel pipes and pressure-rated fittings should be used.

  • Nitrogen pressure testing must confirm system integrity.

  • Cable and pipe penetrations should be sealed with fire-rated materials.

  • Ventilation ducts must be equipped with automatic dampers.

  • The protected enclosure must retain the gas for at least 10 minutes after discharge — verified through a Door Fan Integrity Test.

Incorrect installation or unverified calculations can lead to uneven gas distribution and reduced effectiveness.

Toxicity and Safety

When designed according to standard limits, FM200 is safe for occupied spaces.
It produces no toxic by-products and does not corrode electrical or electronic equipment.
